Dozen a Day David Gordon TrioDavid Gordon - Piano, Ole Rasmussen - Bass, Paul Cavaciuti - Drums |
ZZCD 9801 |
Dozen a Day is the result of an extraordinary day of recording at the famous AIR Studios in London. The David Gordon Trio re-creates the sparkle and clarity of its live performance in a mixture of original compositions and jazz standards, presenting a wonderful range of moods and contrasts. At one end of the spectrum the bright nursery rhyme quality of the opening track Mr. Sam to the lullaby elements of Blue Pyrenees. A thrilling début album from this young trio.

The David Gordon Trio was formed for a tour of the UK in 1995 and has toured the UK each year since then. From the first moment we played together, we found an integrated sound and approach to the music. Ole, a resident of Copenhagen, Denmark, a former student of Niels-Henning Řrsted Pedersen, and who played and recorded extensively with Swedish saxophonist Peter Gullin, gives the trio a distinctly "European" sound. Paul, who studied at the Berklee School of Music, Boston, now also a keen jazz educator and involved with the therapeutic aspects of music, and whose highly considered drumming combines a dedication to sound with an unquenchable desire to groove, divides his time between the US and the UK; while I, a classically trained pianist, combine my jazz-playing activities (notably with the Theo Travis Band) with harpsichord playing, both in the Baroque world and in the unconventional setting of the jazz/early music group Respectable Groove. The sounds which result from these diverse backgrounds, combined with the humour and lyricism which permeate the trio's writing and playing have delighted audiences wherever we have played, creating a demand for this recording.
Dozen a Day was the result of an extraordinary day of recording at London's famous AIR Studios. This session - we recorded 13 tracks in all - was propelled by the mastery of sound engineer Matt Butler, and by the luscious, remarkable surroundings. The original compositions included in this recording range from the naive to the sophisticated. At one extreme is the nursery rhyme quality of Mister Sam, the hoe-down like Zimmerfolk, the lullaby element in Blue Pyrenees and the bizarre Czech Bounce; by contrast, check out Ole's bitter-sweet Understand It, and my composition Air, which is modelled on a J. S. Bach keyboard prelude. Our choice of standards takes us from the coolness of Miles Davis's Solar, which demonstrates our commitment to group improvisation, through the landscape of Jobim's How Insensitive to Michel Petrucciani's evergreen, joyful Looking Up.
Enjoy!
