SPANISH DANISH DANCE
This piece is a charming rhythmic love affair between flamenco and classical ways of musical expression. Because my first name is not "Paco", and I was born -not in Andalusia- but in the cold north of Scandinavia, it seems as if the coolness of the Nordic mood is very much attracted to the explosiveness and heat of the gypsy temperament: The Spanishdanish rendezvous!
BLUE SEPTEMBER EYES
Romeo and Juliet...not just love, because what makes the love so impressive?. This is a genuinely romantic melody, blue and bright like the clear sky ,like the days of September in Denmark, and the unavoidable feeling of loss, the autumn is coming, the long farewell: the love, the summer is almost gone...but still here.. as a sense in the air... an unforgettable melody in my ear.....for you to hear.
THE COSMIC JUGGLER
Some incredibly clear summer nights I felt the urge to learn about the star signs in the night sky. I managed to get a map with the most important stars and star signs and spend hours gazing at the blinking lights in the sky. And it makes me wonder: You can easily make a lot of pictures and figures, that does not exist on any map, and the human nature tends to do so in this confrontation with infinity. Actually, there are no signs in the sky, but this is how we comprehend the incomprehensible: we make mind images. We only know very little of the million years of humanoid history, and here around the millennium 2000, we know that we have always been a part of cosmos. This "floating in space feeling", and an almost mysterious sensation ,was my inspiration. While listening, you may close your eyes and experience the space within- your own inner
cosmos-and as you listen to the juggling of hypnotic sixteenth notes from the strings of the guitar: make them shine like stars!
FROM NARSSAQ TO SISIMIUT
I composed this piece of music while touring in Greenland was making a sea journey about 1000 kilometres along the western coastline, playing concerts in the bigger towns, actually rather small societies living on the edge in constant confrontation with the wild beautiful and dangerous Nordic nature. A terrible hurricane reached us at the end of its long journey from Hawaii. Even on the following day, our small ship was rolling heavily in the aftermath of the storm. As for me, I had to practice anyway, and because of the sudden movements of the boat, a new right hand arpeggio was born! In other words; What you hear in parts A and B, reflect the spellbinding beauty of Greenlandic nature ,whereas in part C the storm has certainly arrived.
RUBRIKUBIK
Do you know these puzzles of cubes and squares, that trick your mind
into strange affairs? And what has this got to do with world class football players like f.i.Michael Laudrup?
Well, sometimes the unexpected move will make it all happen, and uncover the enlightening natural solution. If you are into improvisation, Rubrikubik contains many small patterns, that can be used as "licks". And composition is improvisation in slow motion! In this Jazz and Samba ,Brazilian moods are logically dribbling like dancing players, co-ordinating body and mind, like all great sport heroes must do.
THE SECRET GODDESS
As Scandinavian I really learned to appreciate the sun and the heat, because of the long and cold winter season. During those grey and depressing periods you have to seek comfort in your inner sun: "The secret goddess". Normally most religions tends to view the sun as the male aspect. But being masculine myself prefer the life-giving, radiant female inspiration, shining like the sun. This came to me, sitting on a balcony with a view over the Mediterranean sea, playing the Spanish Guitar. Here, to me ,it felt like spring, while at the same time it was freezing and snowing in my hometown Copenhagen. That's when I decided to bring this moment with me as "The Secret Goddess".
BETWEEN YOUR EARS
This is both a humoristic and a serious title. In Danish we have this saying: He has got nothing between his ears.(about a not intelligent person). But from a meditation point of view, this is a very interesting statement relating to Zen-Buddhism. What is emptiness? And according to music and the perception taking place while listening, this is tremendously fascinating: what so ever you hear is happening "between your ears" ,and listening closely, with undivided attention will bring your mind into rest between concentration and meditation. This way it is possible to discover new details, again and again. There is more to the picture than meets the eye ,and -so to speak- more to the music than meets the ear.
SPRING MEDITATION
"Nobody loves you when you are down and out"......That's the cold fact: The Blues.
In times like that it is very important to be able to relax and meditate, turning your winter situation into spring meditation. So, the attitude towards this piece, already expressed in the title: Be peaceful and something beautiful will hopefully flower from your inner soil.
IT COMES IN WAVES
Denmark is surrounded by the ocean. No matter where you are, it is not possible to be more than 50 kilometres from the seashore. And the Vikings where fearless sailors know that many guitar players have practised Villa-Lobos "Etude no. 1" for years in order to achieve good control and flow. When you finally master it, however, you release that no other guitar piece displays that particular right hand arpeggio pattern. That is, until now! A modern Viking made it sail in the blinking, rolling waves of Nordic water.
THE HOUSE OF POWER
Who has got the power? This is the provocative question any individual needs to ask him/herself. I have tried to compose this melody, nearly as a theme for a movie. Hopefully, you will experience the atmospheric qualities. May the power be with you!
DID I LIVE BEFORE?
If one single turtle and one single rubber ring were swimming around in the ocean..... and the turtle only came to surface once every hundred years..... To be born human is just as unusual and fantastic as is the coincidence that the turtle should appear within the circumference of the ring.
This is how we ought to appreciate our human existence!
